I can kind of understand being a little overwhelmed at the choices, but for any experienced gamer this shouldn't be that big of an issue, especially after your first game.Personally, I played my first game with custom spellbooks that I had built the night before (my opponent played the books in rulebook). I really didn't have a problem but I had taken the time to read the cards of the game before play just as I would a CCG I had just started playing.
As others have mentioned, maybe you are trying too hard to win and spending way too much time trying to find the optimal play each turn. Just pick stuff that looks good and get a feel for the game. I'm a hyper-competitive person by nature and love tournament play, but even I don't take my first few games of anything seriously and just play stuff to "see how it works".
