And picking a card at random is "really playing the game"???

I never suggested you pick anything randomly. I suggested you don't put so much thought into it until you learn the game better. Huge difference.

Something I've never done. So your analogy is lost on me.

But surely you know enough about how Magic plays to understand you have a deck that gets drawn from right? Then the analogy shouldn't be lost on you at all. You don't need to have ever played a CCG to understand how one functions and I assumed as much.

Um, no, that won't happen. I play games, I don't study them.

So let me try and understand what you are saying. You absolutely will NOT study the cards outside of the game. You will however study the cards while IN the game even if it results in an agonizing experience of AP. Hmmm, okaayy...

Reading and understanding how the cards work is the same as studying and understanding how the rules work. In a way, the cards are just an extension of the rules and should be read outside the game as such.

Do you ever think about strategies outside of any game you play? I assume you don't since you don't "study" games, you "play" them. Personally, I spend time daydreaming about game strategy often, whether it's Mage Wars or Game of Thrones or Zombicide or whatever. I'm always analyzing strategies and figuring out the most optimal plays, which is indeed "studying" the game. But if that's something you don't do then I can see you're reluctance to read cards outside of the game. I take it you never plan on building your own spell books either since you have to do that outside of an actual game? Well, luckily, there are plenty of builds posted online so you shouldn't have any problem finding some that suit your plays style. Of course figuring out which builds are best for you would require some studying...hmmmm...that won't work then...well, you could always just pick one at random to reduce time spent thinking about the game while not actually playing it I suppose.

I don't really play any Euro games so maybe they are different from what I'm used to and maybe they don't really require any outside thought on how to improve your strategy so maybe our experiences are just radically different. "Studying" games is second nature to me. It's what makes me a better than average player. To each their own though.

I don't play CCGs, and have no desire to. Does that mean this game isn't for me? Maybe, but I hope not, and my first (partial) play was enjoyable, so I'm optimistic.

This might not be the game for you, to be honest. This game certainly requires a knowledge of the cards in order to play it in a reasonable amount of time and cut down on the AP, and if the only time you plan on reading them is while you are actually playing, it's going to be a very difficult experience for you I'd think. Card knowledge is pretty important in this game and playing it without that seems like you are going to greatly limit both your fun and your effectiveness. It would be like playing a Wizard in D&D and not wanting to "study" your spells outside the game and instead deciding to read them all while you are actually playing, which would be a nightmare for everyone involved.

P.S. You may not have gotten that D&D analogy
