I don't know this game, but I gather that people are adding stuff up secretly before the game starts?I wouldn't expect cheating to be a problem, at least not with people I know and play with, but I could imagine unintentional arithmetic errors or other bookkeeping mistakes being a possible problem, as with any game with hidden accounting. Public calculations are handy in my experience not for preventing cheating per se but for helping catch mistakes.
Can you at least verify the arithmetic of each other's spellbook after the game?
