I enjoy both games and will weigh in...

Summoner Wars
Pros:
Extremely [Tactical] from the onset -- and [Tactical] *every* game. Lots of powerful combos. [Event Cards] provide a "catch-up" mechanic. Fun!
Cons:
Draw-luck can be brutal. Groups of [Event Cards] can feel broken at times without a per-turn limit.

Mage Wars
Pros:
Fuzzy Tactics from the onset, uncertainty leads to a face-down bluff meta. Initiative much more important than it is in most games. Lots of interesting "condition (burn, weak, etc.)" dynamics. AOE and Kiting reminds me of MMO-gameplay. Fun!
Cons:
Not [Tactical] *every* game, some games are just Rush-in/Beatdown(roll dice until one mage is dead). Dice rolls can feel broken at times when something that shouldnt hit very hard all-crits plus condition(burn).

Play Both! I know I do.
