Unfortunately, I don't think your suggestion would work very well. Actually I tried something like that in my last game
Here is why:
- There are no decoys in the pre-built warlock spell book.
- If you focus on melee you will expose your mage to even more mana-drain (especially mana leeches, drain power) and to ugly spells and conditions such as "dissolve" and "weak" (caused by the gorgon archer). Worst of all: the warlock will soon be melee attacked himself by the wizard's army, take a lot of damage and find it hard to ever recover from it.

fortunately, I do not let the Wizard bring out an army. Maybe that's the problem. besides, IF the Wizard is allowed to bring out an army, they are not doing what I consider to be "mana drain," as all-in Drain is expensive! You want to melee them so hard the Siphon was a liability.
from NC (near center), you can literally be Lashing your opponent on Turn 2 (teleport) and on Turn 3 dropping Decoys (fake Jinx, fake Nullify, Mana Piggy Bank).
I have zero experience with the Pre-Builts... so you got me there.
