I tried to use and participate the forum in the beginning but it was really annoying and I simply stopped using it alltogether. The worst was the notification system if you did not check new posts for some time they were not shown as new so you missed a lot of posts.

Yes, their forum basically stunk. I would think they want people there for the random clicks that get them revenue.
Otherwise, as you say, BGG has a HUGE number of users and is free.
Multiply that by a bazillion for Facebook.
Initially one of my friends could literally not post.
