Curt, I wouldn't play this game at all if I were you.
Your advice might have persuaded me not to buy it. But I already bought it, and spent the time reading the rules, and teaching it to my son, so we'll probably play it at least a bit. Then we'll see.
Curt, i'll be interested to hear your thoughts on the game if/when you and your son play a few more games. even with your way of starting the game, it will allow you both to learn a few cards and find a few favorites.
like several people have said, it may not be the game for you, but it sounds like you are intrigued enough to try it a few times. your concern (and the reason you originally posted) was difficulty getting started. by any measure, that's a fair concern, because it was the problem you ran in to.
i'm looking forward to hearing what you and your son think once you've had a couple games under your belt. as a eurogamer, i think you've probably tackled a few games with a steep learning curve (dungeon lords, T'Zolken, and Caylus come to mind, personally), and i hope/think you'll find a lot to enjoy in Mage Wars if you choose to tackle the learning curve. good luck!
Curt, i wanted to follow up and see if you and your son had managed to get a few more games in. are the two of you finding the game more enjoyable?
