I am all for house rules. Two thoughts.
I see Mage Wars is to MTG as Chess is to Poker
In MTG the cards are randomized and a big part of the game and the deck building is based on probabilities. You build your deck with utility of cards in mind but respecting that you may not see every instance of cards in your deck....but your opponents options will be limited as well.
In Mage Wars probability is not a factor at all. You build your spell books with utility in mind and that's it. What do you think you will need to cover any conceivable situation.
Do the openings get bland? I have only played like three games but before starting my first game I expected standard openings to be the Norm. It definitely seems to be the case.
Now in chess there are standard openings....they exist for a reason..but you can do something unpredictable ..and masters often do ,,,,which throws your opponent off balance and forces him to think outside his comfort zone.
Now I think this introduces a sort of meta game that doesn't exist in MTG as each player tries to get into each others head. No frustrating limitations of drawing cards..each player gets to do what he wants. This will get better as expansions are released as long as interest stays high.
As far as the little ones assertion that it is op to be able to select your spell. He is correct in the context of MTG however...in Mage Wars it is about knowing When to cast the spell. an expert will consider his opponents options and choose the correct time....it isn't Op in this context.
Just some thoughts...please play however allows you to enjoy the game .
