Slow games in my experience are often due to AP. A house rule about speeding play with timers - first player to select two spells hits a 1 minute timer on the other player or for final selection; timed spell selections - is cool once you are experienced with the game and truly adds a battle frenzy feel to the combat.

Another cause of slow play is turtling. If you turtle and then have your creatures slog it out, the game will take FOREVER. Hit the opposing mage as fast and hard as possible and you'll get games that last 60-90 minutes.
