To date we have played duels and tried a 3 player free for all, but it did not flow very well. It always seemed like one player would turtle as the other two beat each other down and someone plays clean up.
Which should be a surprise to... no one.

Mind Link is how it is presented in the Mage Wars book. You and your partner have full access to each other’s cards as far as knowing what spells they select each turn and what enchantments they lay down etc. You can communicate and discuss strategy with them during the planning phase and help dictate where enchantments are placed etc. Essentially you are one mind in two bodies. Every move made from your team can be directly influenced by your partners input.
That sounds like a great way to... spend all day playing one game.

Closed Mind method is where you share nothing with your team mate outside of in game play. They will not know what you do until you do it. You can ask for help and trust that they take actions that benefit your team as a whole, but outside of that you are playing your own strategy and doing the best to adapt and compensate for the strengths and weakness in your opponents moves.
Yup. That's my plan. I just got my 4 player markers (and expansion). Looking forward to it.
