well having played MW quite a bit the last couple weeks since gen con, i can say the spellbooks arnt necessary but they do make it so much easier to find the cards your looking for.it may sound gimiky but its actually very useful. you can orginise it however you want. say you have a really cool combo, put those cards together so you keep it in mind when your ready to use it.
trust me, dont knock the spellbooks till you play 10 games or so.
